I also made a few fabric changes in the building. The foundation was done in a black, but seemed too dark and I changed that to a brown as well as some of the entry steps.
Even though I have settled on the painted sky, I wanted to see what the church looked like on the pieced background. The colors are off because my old digital camera's flash has quit working (good reason to get rid of it and use my new camera) With the pieced sky it is just too much going on...

Looking GOOD!
The whitish areas in your painted piece are very cloud like. How about piecing that part with some of those newly selected batiks? If the darker part of your sky is nearer the ground, there will be more contrast to and emphasis on the church.

The whole cloth sky looks more serene and "prairie like", which suits the subject matter of the church, too.

Interesting how people see things differently. I personally prefer the pieced sky as it is more dramatic and seems to contrast well against the peaceful church. Nellie's suggestion sounds about right - piece your painted piece with some of the batiks (and lose that white line) which will add a little drama, but the colors are closer in value and the peacefulness won't be lost completely.
I love the design decision part of a project!
